Sources: Manning set to retire at the end of the season

Darren Conolly reported on twitter at roughly 10:45 pacific time and reported one of the first rumours of the Broncos quaterback potentially retiring. A chain of tweets are saying that he may retire but no other sources have reported.

Heres the tweets:

“@DConnollyNFL: BREAKING: Source close to situation: #Broncos QB Peyton Manning is “leaning strongly towards retirement” after 2013-14 season #NFL

“@DConnollyNFL: Source also says “Manning is willing to put it all on the line for one more ring but the risks outweigh the benefits for him to continue”

“@DConnollyNFL: Expect if asked for any reports/Q’s concerning retirement talk to be shot down for now, Manning will announce on his own terms (continued)”

“@DConnollyNFL:  However, Manning has privately told people in his inner circle that he is almost certain that this is his last season #Broncos #NFL

Broncos Receiver Caldwell takes offense after not being invited to Duke practice

Denver Broncos wide receiver Andre Caldwell went public to express his feeling on not being able to practice at Duke with teammates Peyton Manning, Demaryius Thomas and Wes Welker as well as Giants quarterback Eli Manning.

to practice receiving routes. Caldwell went on Instagram and posted a picture of a burning sheet of paper that read:

“No invite to Duke to run routes and catch passes. Damn right I took it personal”.

The response from followers were very different. Some said that he had every right to be offended while some said to step up his game.

Caldwell was drafted in the 3rd round by the Cincinatti Bengals (97th overall pick). In his first season with the Broncos he racked in 1 reception for 18 yards in only 8 games played. Caldwell’s production value was minimal for Denver last season and with Welker being added in the mix of Denver’s receiver set expect Caldwell to receive even less production. His minimal production is most likely why he didn’t get the call to go practice at Duke.

The Broncos organization, nor the players involved (Manning,Welker,Thomas and Decker) have yet to make a statement.

Can KC Compete With Denver?

Can the new KC defense compete with Manning and the Broncos?

Can the new KC defense compete with Manning and the Broncos?

If you have been listening to the news around the NFL you may think this is a very silly question. The Kansas City Chiefs can’t possibly compete with the Denver Broncos! I have read that KC will have to wait till Peyton Manning retires before they will have a shot at the number 1 spot in the AFC West. You maybe right although you maybe wrong.

The Chiefs have put together quite a team this offseason. Denver added Wes Welker but KC turned right around and said “We’ll see your Wes Welker and raise you a Sean Smith and a Dunta Robinson.” What do the signings of Smith and Robinson mean to Manning? It’s not going to be that easy anymore.

Brandon Flowers has been the only shut down corner for the Chiefs since Carr left for Dallas

Brandon Flowers has been the only shut down corner for the Chiefs since Carr left for Dallas

Last year Manning was able to exploit the KC secondary due to only having Brandon Flowers on one side but really no one to cover the other side of the field. This caused Safety Eric Berry to play deep and cover almost the entire backfield to prevent the “Big Play”.  The slot receiver was almost always open due to not having a good covering Free Safety.

The addition of Smith will help Flowers and KC's secondary

The addition of Smith will help Flowers and KC’s secondary

This year Manning will have to look at two very good covering Corners on both sides of the field in Flowers and Smith. He will also have to work against a good covering Free Safety in Dunta Robinson. This combination will take away his outside routs as well as his over the middle routs. Eric Berry will have the ability to roam all over the field. Manning will have to account for that when he throws the ball hap haphazardly down field.

Tamba Hali and Justin Houston will be the most dangerous pass rushing duo's in the NFL

Tamba Hali and Justin Houston will be the most dangerous pass rushing duo’s in the NFL

Why will Manning throw the ball haphazardly down field you ask? Because he has one of the best pass rushing attacks in the NFL coming after him on every play. New Defensive Coordinator Bob Sutton has already said he is going to install a more aggressive 3-4 defense in KC, which means that Tamba Hali and Justin Houston will be sniffing down Manning’s throat on every play. This aggressiveness will significantly cut down the time that Peyton has to throw the ball. Let’s be honest if you give a good QB all day to throw the ball he can pick your secondary apart no matter how good it is.

Devito will be a valuable addition to KC's D-Line

Devito will be a valuable addition to KC’s D-Line

Let us also not forget that the Chiefs beefed up their defensive line this year as well. Returning to the line up will be the big NT Dontari Poe and Tyson Jackson. Poe will be entering his second year and has knocked the cobwebs off his game. Look for Poe to be the anchor to collapsing pockets and stuffing the runs up the middle. The Chiefs added through free agency big DE Mike DeVito which will supply that little extra push up front. Bronco offensive lineman will be to busy with this front to be able to get to the second level on run plays and being overpowered by them on pass plays to be able to block Hali, Houston, and don’t forget about Derrick Johnson.

The way it is looking there are not too many holes in KC’s defense. I really only see one that I am a little concerned about, who will be that other inside linebacker playing next to Derrick Johnson? Look for this to be answered in the 2013 Draft or maybe a late pickup in Free Agency.

So can KC compete against Manning? I think they have a really good shot, but we will only know when they finally meet on the field. I like their chances as it stands right now.

Raiders: Oakland Signs Tracy Porter

Tracy Porter signs deal with Oakland

Tracy Porter signs deal with Oakland

Tuesday has been a busy day for the Oakland Raiders! They have signed Matt Flynn, traded Carson Palmer and now have signed CB Tracy Porter. The former Denver Bronco CB Tracy Porter reached agreement on Tuesday with Oakland for a one year deal worth $2.5 million dollars according to ESPN’s Josina Anderson.

Porter said in a text message, “I am going to Oakland. They presented the best opportunity for me to get my career back on track after what transpired last season with the Denver Broncos.”

Porter is probably going to be in one of the two starting spots for Oakland. It also seems that the Porter signing is not really a big suprise. Dennis Allen was his position coach when he was in New Orleans Saints. Porter left New Orleans to sign a one year agreement with the Denver Broncos.

Porter started the season as a starter but after he was dealing with effects of a seizure he suffered in the summer, Porter could not regain the favor of the coaching staff and never could get back on the field.

Porter is likely to fill one of the Raiders’ two starting cornerback vacancies. The Raiders also recently attempted to sign Terence Newman, but the cornerback decided to re-sign with the Cincinnati Bengals and tweeted last week that he turned down more money from the Raiders to accept Cincinnati’s offer.

Porter has a Super Bowl ring when he played with the Saints. In that game he returned a 74 yard interception for a touchdown against Peyton Manning and the Indianapolis Colts. Porter has eight regular season interceptions in his career.
