Do The Chiefs Already Have Another Tony Gonzalez?

Tony+Gonzalez+Denver+Broncos+v+Kansas+City+bW6hmIBt1HJlI remember the days of TG catching everything all over the field. He was magnificent, a true revolution to the TE position. So when trade talks were rumored that Tony could come back to Kansas City, I was truly hopeful they could find a way. Knowing this was imposable considering Atlanta would want far to much for him I was not all that surprised when the time came and then went with no deal done. Once the disappointment came and went, I started to think if KC fans would ever see another TE that could remotely fit the position that Gonzalez left behind, and I think I may have found him.

Now don’t get me wrong, I am in no way saying if the Chiefs did this all things would be fixed. If they tried this it could potentially be a massive flop and you could be calling me an epic idiot after it all went terribly wrong. With that being said I think there’s a gigantic opportunity on this roster that the Chiefs are not taking advantage of. A opportunity that would not only solve a few problems with the offense but make this player finally show us why they pay him so much.

Who is this player? Well how about Dwayne Bowe? Bowe you say… Yes Bowe! So far this season he has not produced for this offense. Why you say? Well Alex Smith is the answer to that question. No, No, No, I’m not talking trash on Smith. I think he has been a fantastic fit for this offense. Problem is Bowe is big and slow which makes him an easy cover assignment for almost any NFL corner. He is not fast on his breaks and route running is not that crisp and clean and when he does run a fantastic route the corner can almost always catch right back up with him. Bowe is a type of WR you throw to his back shoulder, or up in the air and let him fight for it. Here lies the problem with Smith as his QB. Smith will not do any of that, he will not throw to Bowe unless he is completely open. How many times have you seen Bowe jump for a ball this season? ZERO!!!

nfl_g_bowe_600So here is my bold suggestion to Andy Reid, and he would probably will tell me I am completely nuts!
….If so he can give me a call, I would love to talk to Big Red!

Anyways…

I say why not set Bowe up as the second TE? It is no secret that Andy Reid loves to run the two TE set, so why not allow Bowe to set up on the weak side as that guy? Bowe is tall (6′ 2″) and big (221lbs) and we have seen this year he can block fairly well. He would also be a nightmare for any NFL linebacker to try to cover. With Bowe’s size and ball skill he could work the middle of the field like no one has seen. Well, since Tony Gonzalez… but maybe, just maybe he could be even better then TG in that position.

The Chiefs revolutionized the TE position with a former basketball player Tony Gonzalez, could they do it again with a WR turned TE with Bowe?

Why are we focasing on the Individual rather then the team?

I couldn't help myself but show the most arrogant player in recent history.

I couldn’t help myself but show the most arrogant player in recent history.

Read an article today that kind of got me in a little bit of a fuss. So if you will bear with me for a bit I just have to get some things off my chest.

So why are we focusing so much on the individual performances in football rather then the team performance? Is it because we are Americans and we just have that individualistic mentality? I don’t think so. I think we have seen a shift in this media driven NFL world we live in today. Some players are all about themselves and the media does not do them any favors when they plaster their name and face all over the TV, internet, newspapers, and radio.

The article I was reading (link to it here) was all about how the Chiefs missed out in 1983 on three Hall of Fame quarterbacks, John Elway, Dan Marino, and Jim Kelley but instead went with Todd Blackledge. Yes, I know how Blackledge worked out for the Chiefs, he didn’t.

What really just gets my goat is I have seen a flurry of these types of articles in the past and they are getting even more frequent now more then ever. The media jumps on every opportunity to highlight how a team passed on a great player and went with one that did not work out, but why did that player not work out? Is it because he is not the athlete everyone expected, or is it because the scheme, surrounding players, and the coaching staff were all wrong?

If you’re stuck in the rut of the me, me, me attitude when it comes to sports your more then likely are going to blame the individual. If you have a team outlook on things you can’t deny the second choice. The environment the player was put in was all wrong. Maybe instead of thinking what if Dan Marino would have come to Kansas City, instead you think what if Todd Blackledge would have gone to Miami.

Todd Blackledge 1984 Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback

Todd Blackledge 1984 Kansas City Chiefs Quarterback

Just maybe if the two players switched spots you would see Blackledge’s name all over the NFL and not Marino. Maybe Blackledge would be heading to the Hall of Fame and not Marino. Maybe you would be saying look at the Chiefs bypassing on Blackledge and went with the draft bust of ’83 Marino.

Never thought of that way before? That’s ok your not alone.

Simple fact is that football is a 100% team sport. No quarterback can be great without the other 10 guys on the field with him. No linebacker can be great if were not for the other 10 guys supporting him. Players become great due to good coaching, schemes that maximize their abilities and surrounding players that support them.

Matt Cassel

Matt Cassel may have become a great QB in Kansas City

There are many examples of this philosophy all around the NFL. Guys that are great go on to other teams and under-perform. Since we are talking about the Chiefs I will give you a great example. Matt Cassel came to KC after a great years performance at New England. He was shoved in after Tom Brady was injured early in the season, never to return that year. Cassel performed due to great coaches, a good scheme that fit him, and players that performed around him. Cassel led the Patriots to the playoffs that year. Then he comes to KC and all that just went away. Cassel only had one great year in Kansas City, which if you remember it was due to the offensive coordinator Charlie Weis putting him in the correct scheme. Cassel did so well he was invited to the Pro Bowl that year. Then Charlie Weis left and he was never the same.

Just think if Weis would have stayed. Would Cassel be leaving or maybe he would be coming off a Super Bowl run ready to become one of the highest paid quarterbacks in history. What if, what if, what if… I am sick of this way of thinking!

The draft is almost upon us and the one thing you have to know is each one of those guys drafted is a big gamble. No one knows how any of those guys will work out when they start to play ball for their respected teams. Some guys will perform like they think they will, others will under-perform and others will over-perform. Who knows!

One thing I can predict is in 5 or so years you will see an article about how your favorite team missed out on a great opportunity in the 2013 draft.

Ok, ok… I’ll get off my soap box now…

A Break Down of the Kansas City Chiefs 2013 Schedule

kansas_city_chiefs_rough_wallpaper-normalThe NFL finally released the 2013 schedule this past Thursday. With a little break period before the NFL Draft we can do a week by week break down of the Kansas City Chiefs 2013 Schedule. How will they do? Will it be better or more of the same? I mean, it can’t get any worse… Right?

__________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 1. @ Jacksonville Jaguars

jaguarsJacksonville finished last season with a 2-14 record like the Chiefs did. While KC fixed all the holes in their D and put an end to (hopefully) bad QB play and poor coaching, the Jaguars did not. With a new coach and (Blame) Blaine Gabbert at the helm look for the Chiefs to take this game easily.

Chiefs Win!

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 2. Home vs Dallas Cowboys

Dallas Cowboys Logo - Teach Me GenealogyAhhhh… yes… America’s team… The Cowboys finished 2012 with an 8-8 record. This offseason they made Tony Romo one of the highest paid QB’s in the league. Really? Tony Romo? That would be like the Chiefs extending Matt Cassel’s contract and giving him more money after a mediocre year… ummmmm… Let’s bypass that last statement… KC will look to be establishing that all important home field advantage in front of a fan base that is hungry for blood. Look for the Chiefs to shove that “America’s Team” title and Romo’s big contract down their throats.

Chiefs Win!

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 3. @ Philadelphia Eagles

PhiladelphiaEagles_logoCoach Reid returns to Philly! This is going to be a huge build up game for the media but I really don’t think the game will live up to the hype. No one wants to win more in Philly then Coach Reid does and he can sugar coat his feelings towards Philadelphia all he wants. Reid will be out for blood and what a better place to draw it. Look for the Chiefs to put a hurting on the Eagles, and Reid will have his revenge!

Chiefs Win!

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 4. Home vs New York Giants

New-York-Giants-LogoThe Giants finished last years season with a 9-7 record. I really don’t know why I am worried about this team as much as I am because on paper the Chiefs match up well with the Giants. It might be because the Chiefs will be coming off an emotional win in Philadelphia and might not be up to par. I hope I’m wrong and the fans can push them over the edge and pump them up for  a win. However look for the Chiefs to drop one to New York.

Chiefs Lose

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 5. @ Tennessee Titans

Tennessee-Titans-logo-psd56766The Titans finished the season with a 6-10 record in 2012. Tennessee could really never put anything together offensively nor could they stop anyone from scoring on them. They were able to maintain some good players and add a couple here and there but did not fix some of the glaring holes they had. So look for more of the same this year and an easy win for the Chiefs!

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 6. Home vs Oakland Raiders

imagesraidersRaider Week! These weeks are some of the best weeks in KC. Chiefs fans pull out the Raider Hater t-shirts and trash is spoken all over KC, there is nothing better then playing the Raiders! I don’t know what it is but for some reason the Raiders always put on a show against the Chiefs. No matter how good or bad either team is, it is always a close game. Look for the Chiefs to get the better of this showdown this year.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 7. Home vs Houston Texans

texansThe Texans ended with a 12-4 record being the first place team in the AFC South last year. At times the Texans showed an unstoppable offense, but the powerful defense is what stands out. No sense in believing they will miraculously fall on their face in 2013. Despite home field advantage KC falls to the Texans.

Chiefs Lose

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 8. Home vs Cleveland Browns

Cleveland_Browns_DawgWith a 5-11 2012 record the Browns don’t seem like they will get the best of anybody this year but I believe the Browns are one of those sleeper teams. You know, the ones who come up and bit you on your rear end when you least expect it. Make no mistake, Cleveland will be a better team in 2013 but not good enough to beat the renewed Chiefs.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 9. @ Buffalo Bills

buffalo_bills_logo-9050The 6-10 Bills were not the greatest thing since slice bread last year but for all fairness they were a lot better then KC. Bills will be working with a new coaching staff just like the Chiefs but KC has a secrete weapon, Coach Reid and 6 Pro Bowlers. KC will also be looking for a good win to go into the bye week with. Kansas City will beat the Buffalo Bills quite moderately.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 10. BYE

NFL Lockout Looms As Negotiations Are ExtendedA little rest and relaxation for the Kansas City Chiefs.  If all has gone the way described above then they deserve it.

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 11. @ Denver Broncos

Broncos-Logo-head-with-team-nameI believe the Chiefs can compete with the Denver Broncos unlike last year. Just in Free Agency KC has added the depth and talent to fill in the holes it had last year when these two teams faced off. I do believe KC will win one of the two times these two teams meet in 2013, but even though KC will be coming off a Bye and will be hyped for this game, look for KC too drop a nail biter in Denver.

Chiefs Lose

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 12. Home vs San Diego Chargers

ChargersWhile the San Diego Chargers had an ok season last year, I believe they will be more of the same in 2013. No big moves in Free Agency and what they can pick up in the Draft will not push them in any big way to put W’s in the win column. Plus it seems there is some doubt in the Chargers camp about QB Phillip Rivers and if he is the guy. It looks like he may have lost the fan base and after the fans turn against you soon turns the team and then the organization. Look for the Chiefs to win big at Arrowhead.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 13. Home vs Denver Broncos

Broncos-Logo-head-with-team-nameIn week 13 Denver will visit the Chiefs at Arrowhead. The loudest stadium in the NFL will not disappoint. Fans will be rowdy and fired up for this game. Not only did the Broncos beat the Chiefs in week 11 but this game has playoff implications. Another great game but I think the Chiefs hold the advantage in this battle.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 14. @ Washington Redskins

redskinsThe Washington Redskins finished the season 10-6 and first in their division. This team will pose a big threat for Kansas City all focused around their QB RG3. KC is known not to do well against mobile QB’s and RG3 is not only mobile but can sling the ball down the field with incredible accuracy. This game all depends on the health of RG3, if he is healthy this will be a loss, but if not the Chiefs should pull this one out. I will mark this one down as RG3 is healthy and Chiefs lose to the Skins.

Chiefs Lose

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 15. @ Oakland Raiders

imagesraidersIt’s getting close to the end of the season and now teams are jockeying for playoff runs. The Chiefs will be looking to either pull out as the AFC West Champs or hopefully have a good enough record to slip in as a wild card team. Kansas City will be trying desperately to keep up with Peyton Manning and the Broncos so every division win is crucial. Look for KC to hold nothing back against the struggling Raiders.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 16. Indianapolis Colts

colts-logoIf there is another team in the NFL that Chiefs fans hate more then the Raiders it would be the Colts. The Colts and the Chiefs have history. It was the Colts that ended a playoff appearance in ’95 as well as both playoff appearances in ’03 & ’06 and Chiefs fans are still a little P.O’ed about it. With this in mind the Colts will again be in position to end another playoff birth for the Chiefs if they win this game. The Chiefs will want to prove to their fan base they are the best in West with this final home game at Arrowhead. Look for the Chiefs to pull away late in the game and take the (W) away from the Colts.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

Week 17. @ San Diego Chargers

ChargersThe Chargers will look to play the spoiler for Kansas City in this final game in 2013. San Diego will want to end yet another mediocre season on a good note by beating a good team and what a better team to beat then a division rival that may have a chance at the playoffs. Be careful Chiefs and remember the good old saying “Any given Sunday”. If the Chiefs fall asleep for this game the Chargers will pull this one off. Look for Chiefs to counter this with one of the best games they have all year. Coach Reid will want to go into the post season winning.

Chiefs Win!

_____________________________________________________________________________________________

imagesNow all this depends on a coaching staff that drives the Chiefs to win and a QB, Alex Smith, that is all that people are hyping him up to be. The Chiefs must be better on these two areas before they can do any of the above things that I am predicting. I know, it sounds like I am trying to give myself an out if it all goes wrong. After going down the road of Broken Dreams with the Chiefs year after year, you would be absolutely right!

As of now I see the Kansas City Chiefs finishing the 2013 regular season with a record of…

12-4

Chiefs: Is 2013 A “Redemption Year” for Kansas City?

Is 2013 the "Redemption Year" for the Kansas City Chiefs?

Is 2013 the “Redemption Year” for the Kansas City Chiefs?

Out with the old and in with the new! After coming off of an abysmal 2-14 2012 season the Kansas City Chiefs have made some big changes and are pumped for the 2013 season. Can this be the makings of a “Redemption Year”?

The Chiefs have put some thought and planning in who they have brought into Kansas City with the signing of Head Coach Andy Reid and GM John Dorsey. The early signings of these two key head office additions allowed them to get an early start on bringing in the right coaching staff.

Head Coach Staff

Offensive Coaching Staff

Defensive Coaching Staff

Special Teams Staff

Strength and Conditioning Staff

With the coaching staff assembled early they had a very unique opportunity to start reviewing the team and finding out who they wanted to keep, release, as well as positions they needed to improve upon.

Through this precess the Chiefs managed to maintain players like Dustin Colquitt, Branden Albert, and Dwayne Bowe. All, with exception of Albert were about to go out into the free agency market and would have been picked up early by other teams.

KC also added some big names to the glaring holes the new staff recognized on film. Players like QB Alex Smith, CB Dunta Robinson, WR Donnie Avery, QB Chase Daniel, TE Anthony Fasano, CB Sean Smith, OL Geoff Schwartz, FB Ryan D’Imperio, and DE Mike DeVito.

Returning in 2013 is also the 6 Pro Bowl players that belonged to that 2-14 team, Jamaal Charles, Eric Berry, Derrick Johnson, Tamba Hali, Dustin Colquitt and Justin Houston.

The foundation is here KC and the stage is set for an exciting 2013 season. It’s time to put the past in the past and start winning again!
